Abstract

This is a guide to help organizations incorporate the Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) into their Web site(s). It provides information on the tasks required, the resources required, and gives guidance on how to best manage and execute the implementation.

NOTE: There are significant legal issues involved with publishing a privacy policy whether in human readable or P3P format. Although various legal issues may be discussed in this guide, it should not be considered a substitute for legal advice.

Status of currency of this document

Please note that this is a working draft of the Implementation Guide and is subject to revisions and corrections. Revised versions of this document will be distributed for circulation on an as needed basis. Updates on this document and the final version of the Implementation Guide will be provided on p3ptoolbox.org.

Policy Generators and Implementations Tools

There are a variety of resources available to assist Web sites implementing P3P. This includes privacy policy generators, P3P generators, the World Wide Web Consortium's P3P Validator and other W3C information on P3P. These are links to resources outside of P3P Toolbox. We can provide some assistance, but cannot provide comprehensive technical support for tools provided by any of these links.

User Agents

Web users interact with P3P through P3P-implemented user agents, such as Web browsers, media players, plug-ins, and other tools.

Basic Implementation Guide for Non-profit Web Sites

Privacy Seal Programs and Consultancies

In addition to P3P Toolbox and the W3C, there are a variety of other organizations and businesses that can provide assistance in implementing P3P or developing comprehensive privacy policies for your Web site. This includes organizations dedicated to helping create and verifying its members' good online business practices and consultants that can assist Web sites in implementing P3P.
